Side Assist (Touran, Tiguan, Passat, Arteon, Touareg)
Side Assist provides the driver with support for lane changing. Two radar systems at the rear monitor the areas behind the car and in the blind spots at the sides. Irrespective of whether a lane change is intended, Side Assist indicates all the vehicles in the area which is critical for lane changing. A symbol in the relevant wing mirror is lit continuously to warn the driver of the potential risk. If the driver operates the direction indicators despite this warning, the LED concerned lights up more brightly and flashes to warn the driver of the risk. Side Assist is active at speeds of 30 km/h and higher. Side Assist is always offered together with Rear Traffic Alert as a standard feature and Lane Assist as an option.
Lane-change assistants (Blind Spot Sensor and Side Assist plus Lane Assist)
Depending on the model and configuration, the equipment installed may include the Blind Spot Sensor (Polo, Golf, T-Cross, Sharan) or Side Assist (Touran, Tiguan, Passat, Arteon, Touareg) – in each case with Rear Traffic Alert as a standard function – together with Lane Assist. In this case, the systems are merged. For example, if vehicles are detected in the blind spot during highway driving and the driver attempts to overtake, Lane Assist will actively countersteer.
