Factory code: Type 151 (Type 15 Cabriolet Karmann)
The Karmann company in Osnabrück also develops a convertible based on the Beetle export model. In contrast to Hebmüller's 2+2-seater convertible, the Karmann developers proudly refer to their model as a four-window model with a functional back seat. The folded-down soft top rests on the body to create sufficient back seat and boot space. The design receives official approval from Volkswagen.
Volkswagen supplies the floor assemblies. In 1949, Wolfsburg orders a pre-production run of 25 vehicles. After Karmann's prototypes pass the rigorous tests at Volkswagen, 1,000 vehicles are ordered from Wolfsburg as a starter package – a huge number for a body shop that is in the process of establishing series production. Production is increased to 10,000 units by 1952.
