Factory code: Type 412
After four years in production, the “Big Volkswagen” Type 4 is redesigned for the 1973 model year. Sales have fallen well short of forecasts, so new features are needed to attract potential customers. The main feature of the VW 412 is a new front end, which makes the front of the car appear lighter and more modern.
The bonnet and wings are more sloping, and the twin round headlights are framed by a more contoured surround. In addition, the bumpers are raised and the indicators and rear lights are changed. To reflect these striking changes on the exterior, the 411 is renamed the 412 E. The tasteful interior is also upgraded, including redesigned armrests and door compartments. The Variant receives the same facelift as the saloon. As with the VW 411, an optional fully automatic transmission with three gears is available for its successor, the VW 412.
