The success of MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles or vans) in the early 1990s was comparable with the current SUV boom. Volkswagen made a key contribution to this trend with the first-generation Sharan presented in 1991. In 1998, the model was comprehensively revised, receiving a new dashboard and new front and rear ends among other elements. A further update followed in 2004 and this version remained in production until 2010. That year, an entirely new generation followed, featuring sliding instead of conventionally opening doors – like the Caddy and the Multivan from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. To date, more than 1 million units of the Sharan have been produced.
