With its market launch in spring 2005, the Passat B6 brings a breath of fresh air to the mid-size class. Designed by Murat Günak, the Volkswagen features an impressive chrome-plated crest grille at the front and is more luxurious, sportier, and more spacious than ever before. The sixth generation uses the new PQ46 platform and is significantly larger: 9.2 centimetres longer and 7.4 centimetres wider, representing substantial growth. The boot capacity of the Passat Variant in particular, with 603 to 1,731 litres of loading space, once again sets new standards. The key to the extra space is the switch to transversely mounted petrol and diesel engines. Equipped in this way, the Passat can hold its own against numerous models in the prestigious upper mid-range class. At the same time, it continues to offer the high level of functionality that its loyal customers have appreciated for over three decades.
The VW Passat B6 is available in no fewer than seven equipment lines. Frequent drivers appreciate fine details such as an electric parking brake and options such as adaptive suspension and the KESSY access system with start button. In terms of infotainment, the Passat is upgraded with new touch-controlled navigation systems and, from October 2005, the "Premium" hands-free system with an ergonomically designed fold-out keypad is also available.
The new DSG gearbox complements the automatic transmissions. All-wheel drive enthusiasts enjoy the permanent 4MOTION drive with Haldex clutch. The aerodynamic BlueMotion versions set new standards in efficiency. In addition to particularly low fuel consumption figures, all diesel models feature a particulate filter. When it comes to engines, many German Passat customers opt for the economically superior, high-torque TDI four-cylinder engines with outputs ranging from 77 kW (105 PS) to 125 kW (170 PS). The spread of petrol engines is greater than ever before. The power output ranges from the sensible 1.6 litres with 77 kW (105 PS) to the top-of-the-range R36 with a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine and 220 kW (299 PS).
