Factory code: Type 147
The Type 147 small van, developed primarily for the German Federal Post Office, is an interesting joint production and mixed construction made from parts of various Volkswagen models: the engine, axles, and transmission come from the Type 1 (Beetle). The floor assembly is based on the VW Karmann Ghia Type 14 – a low entry height makes loading and getting in and out easier. The headlights are also found in the Type 3 saloon. The rear body panels from the Type 2 are supplied by the Transporter plant in Hanover. Production is at the Westfalia plants in Rheda-Wiedenbrück.
The small delivery van is officially unveiled on 9 March 1965. At the same time, the first vehicles are delivered to the German Federal Post Office and begin their service delivering parcels and emptying letterboxes. Two sliding doors on the sides make the postmen's work easier.
Between 1964 and 1974, 7,340 units of the Volkswagen Type 147, better known by its nickname "Fridolin", are produced.
