Luxury class for off-road driving

In 2002, Volkswagen sets its sights on rough terrain with a new model: the Touareg is a luxury off-road vehicle with the luxurious comfort and driving characteristics of a full-size saloon. Named after the most famous nomadic people in the Sahara, the Tuareg, the new Volkswagen model makes no compromises off the beaten track: with permanent all-wheel drive, a climbing ability of up to 45 degrees, and a wading depth of up to 59 centimetres, the 4.75-metre-long vehicle can master even complex off-road passages.

With exceptionally powerful engines ranging from 128 kW (174 PS) to 331 kW (450 PS), more than enough propulsion is guaranteed at all times. A lockable centre differential is standard, while a rear differential lock and air suspension are optional. Depending on the engine and customer requirements, manual and automatic versions with six gears are available.

As a towing vehicle, the VW Touareg impresses with an enormous maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes on a gradient of up to twelve percent.

Superlatives for rallying

The sportiest Touareg derivative is created under the leadership of Volkswagen Motorsport: the two-door Race Touareg is a superlative rally vehicle designed for long-distance competitions and is used successfully. The R5 TDI engine is unusual and demonstrates the suitability of a Volkswagen diesel engine for rallying: in 2009, 2010, and 2011, teams win the Dakar Rally with the Race Touareg.

Limited-edition performance sports car

The Touareg W12 Sport is an ingenious superlative limited to 500 units. Its heart sits under the bonnet – a six-litre twelve-cylinder petrol engine with 450 PS and 600 Newton metres of torque. The off-road vehicle sprints from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kilometres per hour. Exterior accents on the model refined by Volkswagen Individual include sporty aprons, 20-inch aluminium rims, and a four-pipe exhaust system. The interior is rounded off by exclusive interior trim with sports seats and aluminium decorative accents.

Executive comfort

The Touareg W12 Executive has the same W12 engine as the Touareg W12 Sport but is designed with greater emphasis on comfort. In addition to 19-inch Avignon aluminium wheels, the W12 Executive features poplar wood trim and exclusive "Rodeo" leather upholstery.

Individuality is key

Volkswagen adds various innovative details to the list of equipment options. Among other things, a rear.view camera is now available. Multimedia systems (with digital TV option), iPod interface, and DVD navigation system ensure optimum entertainment. Bright bi-xenon headlights with cornering and turning lights make nighttime as bright as day. No fewer than 14 exterior colours, three fabric and 16 leather options, and ten different decorative variants ensure maximum individuality.

Our film star

The Touareg "Kong" special edition is launched to coincide with the new King Kong film. The special model's exterior features include sill extensions in the vehicle colour, 19-inch Avignon aluminium wheels with 275/45 R 19 tyres, silver underbody protection at the front and rear, silver exterior mirror housings, and extensive chrome accents. All vehicles also feature a striking King Kong badge on the B-pillar. Highlights in the interior include leather upholstery, "Engine Spin" decorative inlays, and an entertainment package for rear passengers from Volkswagen Individual. A seven-inch TFT folding screen in the roof lining and two high-quality wireless headphones ensure exclusive entertainment on board.

2006

A fresh new look

At the end of 2006, 2,300 parts of the VW Touareg I are renewed. The front end with its chrome-plated coat of arms grille and sportily tinted rear lights are particularly striking. The ABSplus system is a new feature: it reduces the braking distance on loose surfaces by up to 20 percent. Adaptive cruise control and lane change assist further enhance driving safety. New comfort seats and a 620-watt sound system make long journeys even more enjoyable.
