In 2006, Volkswagen sets new standards in vehicle construction. The elegant four-seater Volkswagen Eos bears the name of the Greek goddess of dawn and combines the best of two worlds: it is the perfect all-rounder for automotive connoisseurs. With the roof closed, the 4.41-metre-long convertible coupé presents a silhouette with an elegant steel roof skin and a standard sliding glass roof. In the open-air season, the Eos can be opened at the touch of a button in just 25 seconds: the five-part soft top is moved with millimetre precision by eight hydraulic cylinders. Electrohydraulically controlled, the 22-kilogram roof mechanism stows the roof panels invisibly in the rear of the vehicle as if by magic. With the top down, 205 litres of storage space are available; with the roof closed, storage space totals 380 litres.
The prologue to the VW Eos comes in 2004 with the Concept C study: at the Geneva Motor Show, the prototype impresses visitors with its electronically controlled coupé, sliding, and convertible steel folding roof (CSC), which is being shown for the first time. The automotive world had never seen a convertible top with such a complex design. When the design by then Chief Designer Murat Günak is ready for series production a good two years later, customers are delighted.
The Volkswagen engineers thoroughly consider not only the pleasure of fresh air, but also safety: high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels in the floor assembly and side structure compensate for the lack of a fixed roof. Safety-relevant parts such as the A-pillar, doors, and cross members are also reinforced. In the event of an accident, a rollover protection system can be extended in just 0.25 seconds.
