Factory code: Type 87 (Derby I) + Type 87 notchback (Derby II)
The Volkswagen Derby is launched in February 1977. It is based on the first-generation Polo and is complemented by a notchback version. Also built exclusively as a two-door model, it is technically identical to the VW Polo I and, as a classic notchback saloon, has an enormous boot (515 litres). The VW Derby shows what ideal basic mobility could look like: compact, sufficient seating space, no luggage problems, affordable purchase price, economical to run. There are three engines to choose from, which are also familiar from the Polo: a 0.9-litre with 29 kW (40 PS), a 1.1-litre with 37 kW (50 PS), and a 1.3-litre with 44 kW (60 PS).
In September 1981, the new VW Derby II is launched at the same time as the second-generation Polo. The two-door saloon is identical to the VW Polo II in terms of technology and equipment but differs at the front with rectangular headlights instead of round ones. The second Derby also impresses with its spacious boot. It is identical to the Polo up to the B-pillar, with uniquely shaped side windows and rear end.
