Optimal space and pleasant car comfort at a fair price: the Touran, built in Wolfsburg, becomes a favourite with active families and takes the compact van segment by storm from 2003 onwards. Depending on the configuration, five to seven seats are available ex works. This means that the compact Touran I can accommodate a wide range of space and usage requirements despite an exterior length of only 4,391 millimetres. A particularly clever feature is that the optional individual seats in the third row can be completely lowered into the boot floor to increase storage space. This transforms the Touran into a small van when needed: with up to 1,989 litres of load space, it offers class-leading capacity.

Technically, the five-door model has plenty of genes from the fifth and sixth generations of the Golf, as it is based on the PQ35 platform, just like the compact bestseller. Handling benefits from a newly developed electromechanical steering system: in combination with the sophisticated chassis with independent suspension at the front and rear, the Touran, which is at least 1,635 millimetres high, drives just as agilely as its Volkswagen passenger car siblings despite its higher centre of gravity. Customers can configure their Touran as a Conceptline, Trendline, or Highline model for a functional, sporty, or luxurious look. A wide range of petrol, natural gas, and diesel engines with outputs ranging from 66 kW (90 PS) to 130 kW (177 PS) offers a variety of economical drive options.

The VW Touran I is manufactured in Wolfsburg until 2009 by Auto 5000 GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.

2006

Fine tuning

The Touran undergoes its first comprehensive product upgrade: in autumn 2006, the Touran, improved in many details, is launched. The revised front end with new headlights and a large grille, the elaborately designed rear lights, and fresh colour accents in the interior are particularly striking. A dynamic 1.4 TSI petrol engine with 125 kW (170 PS) complements the engine range.

2007

Trendy crossover

The CrossTouran derivative expands the range. SUV elements give the Touran a new, muscular look: striking wheel arch extensions and side protection strips, a newly tuned chassis with 12 millimetres more ground clearance, sturdy 17-inch wheels, and fresh colours such as "Biscay Blue", "Red Rock" and "Red Spice" set trendy design accents. Inside, the CrossTouran scores with its unchanged outstanding space and special, orange-accented seat covers.

2010

GP2 – in top form

Major model update for the Touran I: the comprehensively revised Touran is unveiled in April 2010. The completely revamped design echoes the new brand identity of the VW Golf and VW Passat. Almost every body panel has been redesigned and restyled. The side profile now features an upward-sloping window line, while the rear design is based on the new Sharan. Aerodynamic fine-tuning has improved the drag coefficient from 0.32 to 0.29. The engine range now comprises eight Euro 5 engines with outputs ranging from 66 to 125 kW (90 to 170 PS). All engines comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard. The interior features new surfaces and improved operating logic. A new dashboard colour scheme, new climate control, and a new generation of steering wheels make driving even more enjoyable. Innovative optional extras include the RNS 315 radio navigation system, a large-format panoramic sunroof, and Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC). Camera-based high-beam control ensures optimum light in every traffic situation. The automatic parking assistant is now capable of both parallel and perpendicular parking.
