In 2005, a fox succeeds the wolf in the A segment. The new Fox follows the Lupo as the smallest model in the Volkswagen brand and returns to old virtues. It is a car of reason. Its main focus is on providing the best possible economy for the driver: with a base price of just €8,950, the VW Fox is one of the most affordable vehicles in Germany yet still offers optimum practical value. Despite being only 3.83 metres long, the three-door model easily competes with the next higher vehicle class in terms of space. Thanks to a tank capacity of 50 litres and low average fuel consumption of around six litres of petrol, long ranges are guaranteed. The 1.4 TDI with 51 kW (70 PS) can even cover distances of over 1,000 kilometres non-stop thanks to a standard fuel consumption of only 4.9 litres.
The Fox is an in-house development by Volkswagen do Brasil. It is available in Germany from 2005, with market launch in Brazil two years earlier. There is a whole Fox model family there, ranging from the three-door version familiar in Europe to a five-door model (Fox), a crossover variant (CrossFox), and a station wagon offshoot (SpaceFox). Export models for Europe are manufactured exclusively at the factory in São Bernardo do Campo. They not only meet European emissions standards but are also comprehensively optimised for local safety requirements.
