For two complete generations of Golf, there was no estate car in the family – it was not until the VW Golf III was launched in autumn 1993 that the Variant was introduced as the third version alongside the Saloon and Cabriolet. Previously, there had been fears that the (interior) similarity to the Passat Variant could jeopardise sales figures.
The VW Golf III Variant turns out to be a big hit. It offers a 466-litre boot, which can be expanded to 1,425 litres with the rear seats folded down. This volume is actually only 75 litres less than that of the VW Passat Variant 35i (B4). The floor assembly of the Golf III Variant has a modified rear axle with double wishbones and comes from the VW Vento.
The Golf Variant is available with all the numerous engines familiar from the Golf III, ranging from 44 kW (60 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS). The diesel engines with 47 kW (64 PS) to 81 kW (110 PS) are particularly economical.
Numerous special editions are available over the course of the model's life: Europe, Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Europe, Joker, and Family offer interesting equipment details and appeal to bargain hunters with their price advantages over the standard models. The special variants are rounded off by the Yachting: a characterful model with striking front and rear design, including a rear spoiler above the rear window.
