Factory code: Type 14 Coupé
In the spring of 1953, preliminary work on the Type 14 begins at Karmann in Osnabrück. The Italian design studio Ghia is commissioned to design a coupé based on the VW Beetle. The prototype presented at the end of 1953, which still looked somewhat rustic, impresses the clients and is also well received in Wolfsburg: the series development of a 2+2-seater coupé is a done deal. Production of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia begins in August 1955.
With this vehicle, Karmann combines the solid technology of the Volkswagen Beetle with an elegant Italian body. To reduce body roll and oversteer, the Karmann Ghia is equipped with a front anti-roll bar from the outset. The front seating area is enlarged thanks to the wider body compared to the Beetle. The running boards are dispensed with. Drivers enjoy two attractive round instruments and a top speed of 116 km/h, among other things.
A total of 362,601 units are built, many of which head to the USA.
