In March 1981, the VW Scirocco II is launched with a completely new look: “The new Scirocco. Excitingly sensible” is the slogan used for its market launch. The Scirocco II is once again developed and produced by Karmann in Osnabrück.
Like its predecessor, the new Scirocco is based on the VW Golf I platform. The specifications call for a larger interior and boot, as well as a reduction in the Cd value to lower fuel consumption. Giorgetto Giugiaro is also involved in the design process, but his proposal is rejected by the Wolfsburg design department headed by Herbert Schäfer.
Compared to its predecessor, the shape has an almost gentle character, the side view is characterised by a horizontal belt line, many corners are rounded, and it is 20 centimetres longer. The Scirocco II has a larger interior than its predecessor. The shape of the side panels creates more usable interior width – a principle that is later adopted in the Golf II. The roof line provides more headroom at the front and rear.
The Scirocco II is launched with the following engines: 1.3 litre (60 PS), 1.5 litre (70 PS), 1.6 litre (85 PS), and the 1.6-litre injection engine with 81 kW (110 PS).
The smaller frontal area and a vehicle weight that is almost 100 kilograms higher have a different effect on performance compared to the Scirocco I: Thanks to its ten percent lower Cd value, the Scirocco II with the GTI engine has a top speed of 191 km/h, while its predecessor with its more angular design has to settle for 185 km/h. In terms of acceleration, however, the extra weight means that it is a few tenths of a second slower than its predecessor.
