Factory code: Type 47
In the second half of the 1960s, Porsche and Volkswagen decide to build a sports car together. While Volkswagen is looking to expand its range in the performance segment, Porsche wants to establish an entry-level model in the growing market for affordable sports cars.
After a lengthy development period, a compact two-seater with a Targa roof, mid-engine design, and almost Bauhaus-like simplicity is presented: the VW-Porsche 914. Characteristic features include pop-up headlights, upright indicator lights, a low belt line, and horizontal lights at the rear.
There are two model lines: the 914/6, completed and sold by Porsche (2.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with 81 kW/110 PS from the Porsche 911 T), and the VW-Porsche 914/4 (1.7-litre four-cylinder boxer engine with fuel injection and 59 kW/80 PS from the Volkswagen 411 E).
The 914/4 is produced by Karmann in Osnabrück and sold and serviced at specially trained sales centres. The 1.7-litre engine from the VW Type 4 really comes into its own in the sports car environment, impressing with an output of 80 PS and a top speed of 185 km/h. It is also more economical in its new home than in its donor vehicle.
The interior is sportily simple, with the passenger sitting in the same position as the driver, as only the footrest can be adjusted on their seat. The instrument panel is beautifully designed and ensures a great atmosphere for sporty drivers: as in the 911, the rev counter is located centrally in front of the driver.
Typical Volkswagen: the VW Porsche 914 also has a boot at the front and rear, with the Targa roof stored in the rear.
