The sixth generation of the Golf is launched in autumn 2008. Like its predecessor, the new Golf is based on the PQ35 platform, remains compact, but is comprehensively modernised in terms of technology and appearance. "Experience value anew" is the slogan for the market launch of the sixth generation of the best-selling family, and the press kit for the international launch makes a clear statement: "The best Golf ever".
The sixth generation remains unmistakably a Golf. But even at first glance, it appears clearer, more muscular, and of higher quality. In keeping with the proven Golf tradition, there is a choice of a three-door and a five-door saloon version. The design was created under the direction of new chief designer Walter de Silva and is noticeably more streamlined and more linear: the headlights and rear lights are more angular, and the roof and window section rest on a visually widened belt line, which gives the Golf design more presence and additional dynamism.
When it comes to safety and assistance systems, the new VW Golf VI plays it safe. It breaks previous compact class standards and takes a leap forward: a pioneering knee airbag system for the driver is standard in all models. Features previously found only in luxury cars, such as adaptive cruise control, Park Assist, a high-resolution rear-view camera, dynamic chassis control (DCC), a tyre pressure monitoring system, bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights, and LED taillights, can also be configured.
The interior is more elegant than ever thanks to new, higher-quality surfaces. New windows and some double-lip seals ensure a quiet atmosphere on board. A new generation of steering wheels, a fresh operating concept for the air conditioning system, and improved radio systems ensure an ergonomically optimised user experience. The round instruments with chrome surrounds and white backlighting, adapted from the Passat CC, are a real feast for the eyes.
Customers can choose between the Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline equipment lines. The sporty top models GTI, GTD, and R bring the dynamic qualities of the Golf to life in the best possible way. The VW Golf VI's well-thought-out concept proves it right: a total of 3.6 million vehicles roll off the production line over the construction period, including all derivatives.
