Factory code: Type 32B (B2) estate/Type 32B (B2) saloon/Type 32B (B2) notchback saloon
The VW Passat B2 is unveiled in October 1980. It was as if its predecessor had been expanded in every direction – the second generation of the Passat is almost two sizes larger than its rather petite predecessor, the B1, and thus barely recognisable: the estate version is almost 30 centimetres longer than its predecessor, while the width is increased by seven centimetres.
It looks correspondingly larger, both in appearance and in terms of interior, boot, and cargo space dimensions. Its functional body design originates from Wolfsburg and, in combination with the construction based on the previous model, ensures seriousness and reliability.
The Passat II is initially built as a hatchback saloon and a five-door estate – as always under the model name Variant.
At the launch of the new series, the engine range includes the following units: Two four-cylinder petrol engines with 1.3 litres (40 kW/55 PS) and 1.6 litres (55 kW/75 PS or 63 kW/85 PS), a five-cylinder petrol engine with 1.9 litres (85 kW/115 PS), and a diesel engine with 1.6 litres (40 kW/54 PS).
The Passat is initially also available in a Formula E version (with start-stop function, among other features) in combination with the 75 PS 1.6-litre engine.
