The Jetta made its first appearance in 1979 in the sharp-edged design of the time. The Jetta was based on the technology of the Golf I, but featured rectangular headlights and a trunk with a capacity of 510 liters. The 81 kW / 110 PS Jetta GLI with the DNA of the Golf GTI was launched in mid-1980. This was followed in 1984 by the Jetta II based on the Golf II which had been introduced in 1983; the size of the Jetta‘s trunk had grown to a monumental 550 liters. Subsequent generations were marketed in Europe as the Vento and Bora, while the Jetta name continued to be used in overseas markets. It was only in 2005 that the sedan became available in Europe as the Jetta V. Especially in the USA and China, this model enjoys considerable success year after year. Including all derivatives, 20 million units of the Jetta have been sold throughout the world to date.
