Volkswagen has been present in SAM Region for over 65 years, with 6 plants and more than 750 point of sales around the 29 markets in South America, Central America and Caribbean. Since 2017, is experiencing the largest product offensive in its history in the region, with the launch of 20 models. Two important models of this strategy are Taos, first SUV to be produced in Argentina, and Nivus, 100% developed in Brazil and the first model from SAM to be produced and sold in Europe (Taigo). In the end of 2021, VW announced investment of some €1 billion in South America region by 2026, to further local vehicle projects, and also a boost in digitalization and decarbonization projects, such as a research center for biofuels as a bridging technology complementary to Volkswagen’s global electrification offensive.

The Volkswagen highlights of 2018: Electric mobility and new SUV models set the trends
Volkswagen has set an important course for the future in 2018: As the first model of the future ID. family, the zero-emission compact ID. has reached the final phase of series development. In addition, with the avant-garde ID. VIZZION saloon and the racing car ID. R Pikes Peak, Volkswagen demonstrated two more fascinating facets of electric mobility. SUVs are booming worldwide: Volkswagen followed this trend in 2018 with nine new Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) – from the urban T-Cross to the Touareg brand flagship. Various models of different segments like the new Virtus (South America), the attractive up! GTI (Europe) or the Jetta (North America), however, made it clear that Volkswagen serves every region of the world with specific cars. This has resulted in great success: Between January and November, unit sales rose by around 280,000 year-on-year to 5.7 million Volkswagen vehicles. -
Volkswagen provides further impetus for South America strategy with compact model Virtus
The Volkswagen brand is setting a further milestone in its South America strategy. With the world premiere of the entirely newly developed compact sedan Virtus in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Volkswagen is forging ahead with the realignment of the brand in South America. The new model, developed especially for the South American market, offers the latest features based on innovative MQB technology and is among the most spacious cars in its segment. -
South America strategy: Volkswagen invests €560 million at plant in Argentina
Volkswagen is investing some €560 million over the next five years in the production of a new SUV in Pacheco, Argentina. From 2020, the plant will deliver the new model built in Argentina to the entire South American continent. The new vehicle project will create some 2,500 jobs. Volkswagen is thus bringing further momentum to its South America strategy.
