“We worked very hard and we fought for this partnership,” says Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen, recalling the events of the summer of 2018. Back then, the DFB chose Volkswagen as their new mobility partner. “Football is the most important platform for Volkswagen. Not only in Germany, but worldwide, because, apart from cars, football is the most important topic in many societies,” says Diess.

On March 20, the national team will kick off the new international match season with a game against Serbia at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg. “We want to use this first opportunity of the year to turn things around and regain lost ground,” announced team manager, Oliver Bierhoff.”
“It will be an important friendly match before the qualifying for the European football championship in 2020,” says DFB president, Reinhard Grindel. “And we want to show the Wolfsburg audience a side of us they can enjoy and the fans can get onboard with.”
The national team has fond memories of Wolfsburg. In 2003, the then team of coach Rudi Völler won a tryout against Canada, 4 to 1.
“We are looking forward to it. We haven’t had a game in Wolfsburg in such a long time and I hope we will have a great evening with the team,” says sales chief, Jürgen Stackmann.
“There are many football fans among Volkswagen’s employees, especially here in Wolfsburg,” says the general works council, Bernd Osterloh. “We’ll make sure it’ll be a great game and cheer them on.”
For international games, 27,000 spectators are allowed into the Volkswagen Arena. In the days leading up to the game against Serbia, Joachim Löw’s team will visit the factory. Says Herbert Diess, “I’m sure this will motivate our team as well.”
