Factory code: Type 11
In 1972, the VW Beetle undergoes its last major overhaul and is given the designation 1303. New features include a large, curved panoramic windscreen, larger rear lights that are also more visible from the side (known as "elephant feet"), and a modified, padded dashboard with toggle switches instead of pull switches. From the driver's perspective, the Volkswagen 1303 appears much larger and more modern.
From 1973, in addition to the two previous engines with 32 kW (44 PS) and 1303 S with 37 kW (50 PS), the Beetle 1303 is available as an economy version 1303 A with the engine from the Beetle 1200. With its small 34PS engine, simple black bumpers, and basic interior, it is similar to the 1200 "Economy Beetle".
A legendary special model is the "Yellow-Black Racer" (Gelb-Schwarzer Renner), limited to 3,500 units and based on the VW 1303 S. With its Matt black and Saturn Yellow paintwork, it causes a stir at the time and becomes a sought-after Beetle in sports livery.
