Factory code: Type 3C
As of 2010, the seventh generation of the Passat, the B7 (3C), presents itself as a logical further development of Volkswagen’s mid-range concept. Its elegant yet timeless body design, huge amount of space, high quality materials, and an extensive range of engines are the secret to its success.
The B7 generation presented at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2010 replaces the B6 and comes with a more stable body that has been completely redesigned except for the roof, a wide range of engines, and modern assistance options. There are clear chassis and sound insulation improvements compared with the predecessor. The new DCC, Fatigue Detection, and City Emergency Braking assistant are technological innovations.
Varying efficiency and dynamic requirements are met superbly: the available spectrum ranges from economical frequent driver drive systems and comfort-focused superior company cars to sporty, high-performance versions with all-wheel drive. The series comprises two body versions, a classic limousine and an estate, the Variant. The latter particularly represents outstanding transport capacity and remarkable utility that beats the usual class standards. Depending on the reclining position, the Variant 603 offers up to 1,731 litres of loading capacity (as 4MOTION, 588 to 1,716 litres, as TSI EcoFuel 523 to 1,651 litres).
The interior is geared towards the demands of the upper middle class: clear user ergonomics, plenty of practical storage compartments, high-quality materials, and a wide range of assistance options.
In terms of technology, the B7 cleverly draws on perfected solutions: TSI or TDI units with modern direct fuel injection, turbocharging, and innovation consumption optimisations such as BlueMotion and BlueTDI are mounted transversely at the front. From 77 kW (105 PS) to 220 kW (300 PS), the range of drive options is extensive. Many customers opt for the dual clutch DSG. For greater traction and tensile load there are exclusive versions with 4MOTION Haldex all-wheel drive. This is particularly important for the new Crossover derivative, which caters to the crossover trend with a raised Alltrack version.
In its day, the up to 300 PS Passat B7 is an attractive, technically highly sophisticated option for company car drivers, families, and frequent drivers.
