On 17 March 2011, after a nine-year break, a new Golf Cabriolet goes into production. The open-top four-seater uses the technology of the Golf VI and is based on the PQ35 platform. The new edition of the open-air Golf is assembled by the convertible experts at the Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück.
The fourth generation of the Golf Cabriolet is more open than ever before. Instead of the safety roll bar familiar from previous models, two roll modules are integrated into the rear of the vehicle for use in the event of an accident, which can be extended behind the rear headrests in a fraction of a second. A high-strength frame for the windscreen, additional reinforcement panels on the floor assembly, and structural modifications to the side panels, cross members, and doors ensure optimum body stability in the VW Golf VI Cabriolet. The fully automatic electro-hydraulic opening process for the soft top takes just nine seconds, while the closing process takes eleven seconds. The soft top can even be operated while the vehicle is in motion at speeds of up to 30 km/h. The soft top is closely related to that of its sister model, the Audi A3 Cabriolet.
The astonishing quietness on board when the top is closed is made possible by a sophisticated fabric roof and special window and door seals. The soft top structure consists of a frame, an inner lining, a full-surface padding mat, and an outer cover. The connecting longitudinal seams of the outer skin act as additional rain gutters. A front bow and four cross bows are installed between the longitudinal frames of the soft top frame. Even at higher speeds, the fabric roof remains largely free of bulging.
The first VW Golf GTI Cabriolet follows in 2012, and the first VW Golf R Cabriolet in 2013. The available engines cater to a wide range of driving styles: the lineup ranges from 77 kW (105 PS) in the 1.2 TSI BlueMotion Technology and 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology to a sporty 195 kW (265 PS) in the Golf R Cabriolet.
In 2016, after 770,039 units, the era of the open-top Golf finally comes to an end.
