The icon returns to the fast lane. From autumn 2004, the Golf V GTI sets a new dynamic benchmark in the compact class. The new model scores with its 15-millimetre lower sports suspension and a state-of-the-art turbocharged direct injection engine under the bonnet: the two-litre direct injection petrol engine (TFSI) is turbocharged as standard. This generates 147 kW (200 PS) and 280 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm in the compact sports car. It is shifted with a 6-speed manual gearbox – 100 km/h are reached from a standing start in 7.2 seconds. The optional 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) catapults the compact sports car to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds. The TFSI-DSG combination is a new feature in the Golf V GTI.
The design is as sporty as the driving characteristics. In addition to the red trim accents, the honeycomb look of the V-shaped radiator grille is particularly emotive. Other highlights include Denver aluminium wheels, Top sports seats in the front with inner panels in the typical chequered pattern, a three-spoke sports leather steering wheel with aluminium trim, and an electronic differential lock.
The Golf GTI "Edition 30" adds 30 PS – the special series is launched to mark the 30th anniversary of the GTI. Instead of a top speed of 235 km/h, the speedometer needle keeps going up to 245 km/h in 2006 (DSG: 243 km/h). The "Pirelli" is just as powerful in 2007 – it pays homage to the famous "original Pirelli" of the first-generation Golf GTI.
Between 2004 and 2008, 181,000 VW Golf V GTIs are produced.
