Design visualises True Volkswagen. With the True Volkswagen philosophy, the brand is consistently focusing on its core values. The goal is to build fascinating vehicles that reflect the times and what customers want. Volkswagen’s core values also include a design that follows the brand’s great DNA. This is exactly what has happened in the case of the new ID. Tiguan. The SUV is the largest new model in Europe to date that is based on the new Volkswagen Pure Positive design language.
Authentic SUV design. With the ID. Tiguan, the new Volkswagen design idiom has been incorporated into a high-quality and authentic SUV. The softer crossover design of the predecessor has thus given way to a completely new, powerful and visually present SUV design. It deliberately demonstrates a targeted brand identity, but is also highly independent at the same time. Design parameters additionally play a role here. For example, the fact that an all-electric vehicle like the ID. Tiguan requires much smaller air intakes in the front end compared with the Tiguan with petrol, diesel and hybrid drives thus opens up completely different design options. It is clear that the precise lines and taut surfaces lend the new ID. Tiguan stability and visual quality, creating charismatic confidence that makes it seem like a vehicle of a higher class.
Front end
Crystal-clear design. The design of the ID. Tiguan is characterised by great clarity. This is evident in the confident yet likeable front end. The design shows a consistent horizontal structure and an ideal balance of proportions. Visually, this adds visual and a presence that exudes confident calm. The stable appearance is created without aggressive elements. Precise and taut lines, sculpturally styled wings and a voluminous but largely closed bumper mean the ID. Tiguan stands on the road with a homogeneous, likeable and confident appearance.
Focused LED view. A dominant feature of the front end is the horizontal light architecture. The interplay between the LED daytime headlights, LED headlights and the design details implemented independently of the lighting creates the particularly focused look of the ID. Tiguan. The design team deliberately equipped the SUV with a front end based on nature, as this is also part of the Volkswagen DNA that once began with the Beetle. It is also a distinguishing feature compared with the machine-like front end designs of many new car manufacturers. The LED light modules are integrated into a transparent horizontal bar. The designers humorously call this horizontal surface the ‘aquarium’. Located centrally in the centre of the bar: the VW badge illuminated as standard in the Tiguan Style and Tiguan R-Line. An illuminated horizontal strip extends to the left and right of this, emphasising the width of the front end; when the vehicle is switched off, the light-coloured strip remains present. The area above has three-dimensional depth at the outer sides – in the area of the usual headlight position. In the IQ.LIGHT versions, there are three very narrow additional LED strips here, which further enhance the focused look. The horizontal strip of the ‘aquarium’ that follows below is also characterised by three-dimensional depth and sophistication. This area houses the actual headlight modules. The technology modules are embedded in dark surfaces; a chrome look is deliberately not used here. Thanks to this technical design, the LED modules appear like eyes that are mysteriously awaiting their use in the depth of the front end.
Largely closed bumper improves the Cd value. With its wide and homogeneous design, the bumper painted in the vehicle colour dominates the area under the ‘aquarium’. The Trend, Life and Style versions feature ‘air curtains’ at its outer limits, which aerodynamically optimise the air flow around the body. Compared with the predecessor, the already good Cd value has been further improved from 0.27 to 0.26. At the bottom, the bumper of these versions is characterised by a matt black, V-shaped air intake, through which the battery system and the air conditioning system are supplied with cooling air. Thanks to the V-shaped air intake, the lower section of the bumper graphically corresponds to the negative wheel camber that is characteristic of powerful vehicles – this design also ensures the muscular stance of the ID. Tiguan on the road from the front.
R-Line with distinctive front design. The front end of the sporty ID. Tiguan R-Line has a distinctive design below the VW badge. As a small but exquisite touch (‘Secret Sauce’), the R logo is integrated into the transparent depth of the ‘aquarium’ on the right. The customised R-Line bumper is located underneath. The air intake is significantly larger here and is finished in high-gloss black instead of with a matt surface. The larger and aerodynamically modified intake ducts also provide optimum airflow around the front wheels. At the outer sides, the high-gloss transverse section of the air intake transitions upwards into a vertical design intended to resemble the winglets of a jet. An also vertical LED strip is integrated into each of these winglets, making the ID. Tiguan recognisable as the R-Line. The cooling air openings in the lower part of the R-Line bumper are also arranged in a V-shape to emphasise the negative camber of the front axle and thus the vehicle’s stability – the designers call this powerful interplay ‘stance’ in their technical jargon.
Side section
Elongated and powerful. In its elongated silhouette, the ID. Tiguan develops a completely new level of confidence, power and clarity compared with its predecessor. In the upper area, it is immediately noticeable that the vehicle colour now also includes the outer roof line and the C-pillars. This allows the observer’s eye to follow the roof line undisturbed. The line itself runs continuously through into the roof edge spoiler. This design solution makes the SUV appear more dynamic.
Iconic character line. In the level below the greenhouse, the defining element is the straight character line that runs from the front to the rear – a horizontal design element that can be traced historically in different forms to the DNA of classic Volkswagen icons such as the Golf I as well as to equally stylish Volkswagen vehicles such as the Arteon, Phaeton and Touareg. In future, this newly interpreted timeless and confident linearity will once again characterise every new Volkswagen. The ID. Polo and ID. Cross already show it. The character line precisely orders the side surfaces of the ID. Tiguan, emphasises the SUV’s length and lends the silhouette architectural clarity. The new, robust door handles are sturdy and ergonomically designed. Below them, the positively tensioned surfaces of the doors and wings underscore the powerful and confident design of the side view.
Side member panel with sporty DNA. At the sides, the semi-circular wheel housings also define the appearance. They are enclosed by a sturdy trim typical for SUVs and house 19-, 20- or 21-inch wheel rims. There will be a total of seven different wheels for the ID. Tiguan, one steel wheel and six alloy wheels. Between the wheel arches, a dark, horizontal trim extends above the side member; this detail was derived and further developed from the last Scirocco and first Golf GTI. The trim visually reduces the height of the ID. Tiguan and at the same time ensures additional distinctiveness and elegance. On the R-Line version, the silhouette is slightly individualised: among other things by 20-inch alloy wheels in R-Line design (standard for the other equipment lines: 19-inch), high-gloss black applications in the front end as well as mirror covers in the R-Line contrasting colour Night Chrome and the R logo below the exterior mirrors.
Rear end
3D light design with depth effect. At the rear, the design team has consistently continued the horizontal and precise lines of the ID. Tiguan. A defining element here is the LED horizontal bar of the tail light clusters arranged just below the all-round character line. In the IQ.LIGHT version (standard for Style and R-Line), the two outer, almost rectangular LED elements each have a special 3D look. These precisely crafted LED elements of the tail light clusters appear to float freely in the horizontal bar. The designers nicknamed the crystal-like light elements ‘whiskey glasses’ due to their shape and appearance. In the IQ.LIGHT version, the horizontal strips in the rear light bar and the VW logo are also illuminated. In this case, three different sequences can be programmed for the welcome and goodbye scenarios, in which the various LED elements are switched on or off in an individually orchestrated manner. Depending on the setting, equipment and operation, the scenario is activated by the vehicle key, Keyless Access (by contact on the door handles or when approaching with the key), Digital Key (access by smartphone) or by Easy Open & Close (operation of the boot lid by foot movement).
R-Line with distinctive diffuser. Below the tail light cluster, there is a horizontally designed area with the lettering ‘ID. Tiguan’. This area also visually enhances the width of the SUV. The boot lid itself extends well down into the bumper. The lower part of the rear end is characterised by a powerful diffuser that emphasises the stability and confidence – the ‘stance’ – of the ID. Tiguan. Functional elements such as reflectors and towing eye are neatly integrated into the design here. The R-Line is once again characterised by unique and distinctive features: similar to the design of the front end, there are vertical instead of horizontal reflectors in the rear area and a custom diffuser in the R-Line design, which has a high-gloss black paint finish.
Paint finishes – classic colours with a new interpretation. In the exterior colours of the new ID. Tiguan, Volkswagen combines timeless elegance with modern colour accents. As standard, the light Marble Grey emphasises the vehicle’s clear and confident design idiom. Particularly expressive is the new colour Olive Bronze metallic: a warm, characterful hue reminiscent of Italian landscapes when the low-standing sun of the golden hour bathes olive groves and gentle hills in a golden light. This paintwork, which is offered for the first time for a Volkswagen, lends the SUV a special radiance of serenity and a modern sense of style. The colour portfolio is complemented by the brilliant Glacier White metallic the elegant Jeans Blue metallic, the expressive Pomegranate Red metallic, the stylish Scale Silver metallic and the deep black Grenadille Black metallic. Together, they create a colour scheme that emphasises the confident character of the ID. Tiguan from every angle.
