The new Tiguan is set to launch in markets across Europe. The initial second-generation vehicles will be shipped by as early as late April in Germany, and across the rest of Europe in early May. The new Tiguan marks the debut of the Volkswagen Group's first SUV to be based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) – a technology platform that makes the vehicles lighter, more efficient, spacious, safe and comfortable with a more dynamic drive system and appearance. And you can see that in the new Tiguan: it has not only been made longer, lower and wider, it also has a more distinctive, sporty and much more mature look. For Volkswagen, the debut of the new Tiguan also marks the beginning of an SUV product offensive. In the years to come, the brand will be launching other innovative SUVs in all relevant segments of the global market. And for precisely that reason, the Tiguan will for the first time be available in major overseas markets with an extended wheelbase. Following this, in the vehicle classes above, there will be a new mid-size SUV (for the USA and China) and the familiar premium 4x4, the Touareg. Below the Tiguan, not one but two new SUV ranges will be making their debut: in the Golf class it will be an SUV in the style of the T-Roc concept car, while the T-Cross Breeze, being shown alongside the new Tiguan in Geneva, indicates where the journey will take us in the Polo class.
All-round vehicle – new Tiguan is 'The SUV'
Three equipment lines. The new Tiguan had its production launch at the beginning of the year. Advance sales also began in mid-January in many European markets. The new Tiguan is available with front- and all-wheel drive and in the familiar Trendline, Comfortline and Highline equipment lines. The second generation of the best-seller uses the latest generation of the renowned 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. As is the norm at Volkswagen, the all-wheel drive Tiguan vehicles therefore carry the ‘4MOTION' suffix. The ground clearance of all Tiguan 4MOTION versions has been increased by 11 mm (200 mm instead of 189 mm). In addition, the Tiguan 4MOTION can be ordered with a special off-road front end; in this case, its approach angle is 25.6° instead of 18.3°. Meanwhile, the on-road variants can alternatively also be customised with the new 'R-Line' packages. For advance orders the Tiguan 4MOTION is available in two engine versions (both supercharged direct injection engines): as a 2.0 TDI (diesel) delivering 110 kW / 150 PS and as a 132 kW / 180 PS, 2.0 TSI (petrol). In due course, a total of eight engines with a power output ranging from 85 kW / 115 PS to 176 kW / 240 PS will be available. A direct shift gearbox (DSG) is fitted as standard on all models with a power output of 180 PS and above.
Fascination and innovation in harmony. The MQB platform improves every aspect of the new Tiguan. The body proportions of the latest Volkswagen SUV are notably sporty and the design shows charisma from every perspective. A gigantic leap forward has been made in terms of the vehicle's interior space and boot space. Consider the cargo capacity of the boot: the new Tiguan holds up to 615 litres (loaded up to the rear bench seat), while folding down the rear seat backs creates a capacity of 1,655, representing an increase of 145 litres. The new 4MOTION Active Control system also makes it easier than ever to individually adapt the all-wheel drive to all possible use conditions. Thanks to the superior concept of the drive system, the Tiguan is designed for enormous trailer loads of up to 2,500 kg. Meanwhile, assistance systems perfect the vehicle's convenience, dynamics and safety (including Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System as standard). Online connectivity adds new service dimensions (including automatic accident notification, online traffic and parking space information, vehicle status report). App Connect lets the on-board electronics integrate all of today's smartphones from the Apple and Android worlds into the functional features of the infotainment system, and even tablets become an integral part of the car thanks to the Media Control app, resulting in a Tiguan with which Volkswagen is extensively redefining the A-SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) segment. The Tiguan is not a crossover between different worlds – rather it has created its own new and authentic SUV world. An SUV that satisfies all expectations – both on-road and off-road.
Design concept – revolution instead of evolution
Clear confidence. In the second generation Tiguan, Volkswagen designers have created an SUV that transfers a new design quality to this segment in a progressive and competitive way. The precision and logic of its lines as well as its clear and unmistakably dominant character have given the Tiguan a visual profile that clearly distinguishes it from its competitors. The exterior and interior also form coordinated units that are in perfect harmony, resulting in a new original – a masterpiece.
Safety plus – SUV of the 21st century
Protecting other road users. Typical of how the Tiguan is an example of a new type of SUV is its forward-thinking compatibility with other road users. For example, technologies fitted as standard equipment, such as the new active bonnet, City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring and the Lane Assist lane departure warning system improve the overall safety of the new Tiguan in everyday traffic.
Active bonnet. This mechanism raises the bonnet as soon as a person comes into contact with it in a crash. This increases the gap between the hard engine and the relatively soft bonnet and thereby reduces the intensity of dangerous head injuries.
Pedestrian Monitoring and Lane Assist. The new Tiguan consistently utilises the entire range of the most innovative assistance systems to ensure maximum safety. Therefore, the new SUV is equipped with the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, the Front Assist ambient monitoring system including City Emergency Braking and – a new feature – Pedestrian Monitoring as standard. If the radar-based Front Assist of the Tiguan detects a person walking into the road, the system warns the driver. In a second step, it brakes the car. That is far from all, however: the new Tiguan is also equipped with Lane Assist as standard. This camera-based assistance system warns and automatically countersteers if the driver starts to leave the selected lane of on open road without indicating and, thus, unintentionally. Above all, this reduces the risk posed by dangerous oncoming traffic on country roads. Consequently, Front Assist and Lane Assist will elevate the standard equipment on affordable high-volume models to milestone levels of traffic safety.
