With each new generation, the Golf becomes more mature and comfortable. The fourth generation of the GTI takes a particularly big leap forward in terms of perceived quality, thanks to minimised body panel gaps and a high-quality interior. It can also be ordered with a previously unrivalled range of engines: the 1.9-litre TDI engine with 81 kW (110 PS), distributor injection pump and variable turbine geometry is familiar from the third Golf generation. All petrol engines, on the other hand, are brand new: customers can choose between a 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder with five-valve technology and a 2.3-litre V5 naturally aspirated engine. On paper, they deliver the same power to the drive wheels – 110 kW (150 PS). However, both engines interpret driving pleasure in their own individual way. The turbo is the throaty sprinter, while the naturally aspirated engine is the refined powerhouse with the sonorous sound typical of a five-cylinder engine. Volkswagen continues to develop the engines throughout the production period and offers the 1.9 TDI in the GTI with up to 110 kW (150 PS). The petrol engines deliver up to 132 kW (180 PS).
Externally, the fourth Golf GTI is decidedly understated – it has shed almost all recognisable signs of aggressive sportiness. However, with standard extras such as 6.5 J x 16 BBS alloy wheels with 205/55 wide tyres, partially tinted rear lights, and Recaro sports seats, the Golf IV GTI still stands out from the crowd. The lowered suspension ensures additional driving pleasure. The centre console, door handles, and gear knob in the standard GTI are finished in black myrtle wood trim. Fans of fresh air will enjoy the standard electric sunroof.
A special highlight awaits fans to mark the 25th anniversary of the GTI: in 2001, Volkswagen presents the "25 Years of GTI" edition, limited to 3,000 units, which differs from the "normal" GTI both externally and with a special interior: black roof lining, sill extensions, GTI emblem in the grille, Recaro sports seats in "Le Mans" design, leather steering wheel with red stitching, brushed aluminium gear knob with GTI logo. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine, now with 132 kW (180 PS), which transmits its power via a six-speed manual gearbox, is particularly exciting.
A total of 164,859 units of the VW Golf IV GTI are built between 1998 and 2003.
