Factory code: Type 11
A true power Beetle with pulling power and endurance: the new VW Beetle 1500 is equipped with the 1,500cc engine from the Type 2 transporter with 32 kW (44 PS) and disk brakes – and is enthusiastically received by experts. The power of the 1.5-litre boxer engine ensures a top speed of 125 km/h. Driving safety is also improved: disk brakes are now fitted to the front axle and the rear axle is equipped with a compensating spring.
In 1967, the 1300 is joined by a revamped 1500 Beetle. Exterior changes include new bumpers (also known as "railway tracks" or "railway sleepers"), vertical headlights, and shorter engine and boot flaps. Technically, the VW Beetle is modernised with a 12-volt electrical system, dual-circuit brakes, and an external fuel filler flap, among other things. An optional 3-speed automatic transmission connected to a new semi-independent rear suspension is available. The gear positions are designed as follows: 1 = hill climbing, 2 = city driving, 3 = country driving. At this point, all Volkswagen model series (Type 1 to Type 3) are available with a semi-trailing rear axle for the first time, at least in certain equipment variants.
The US-spec Beetle models are highly sought after by enthusiasts: here, the manual four-speed gearbox is combined with the double-joint rear axle and the large engine. Many Beetle fans buy one of these rare models from US soldiers stationed in Germany.
