The Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle) enters its next era with a larger and more powerful engine. Beetle enthusiasts who like to drive fast finally get the more powerful 1.2-litre engine with 22 kW (30 PS) and vacuum-controlled ignition distributor they have been longing for. New in the interior: instead of the starter button, the Beetle gets a combined ignition/starter switch. In addition, the interior is now bright when the door is opened – thanks to the interior lighting that is now standard. And the Beetle is getting lighter: the spare V-belt that was previously supplied is no longer included.
In 1973, the VW 1200 enters its next phase. The "Economy Beetle" continues to be offered. From 1977 onwards, it is only built in Mexico as the better-equipped 1200 L model and imported to Germany until 1985. In expert circles, it is given the name "Mexico Beetle", but its equipment and design are largely identical to the Beetle produced in Emden until 1977.
