The Mexico Beetle also gets the larger rear window. On 12 August 1986, official Beetle exports to Germany are discontinued.

The engine is now powered by fuel injection and is also equipped with a catalytic converter. Other features of the Mexico Beetle, renamed the VW Type 121, include disk brakes on the front axle and a more powerful alternator.

The bumpers are now painted in the same colour as the car, and the handles and window frames are black.

The Beetle continues to be manufactured in some countries, including Mexico, Nigeria, and Peru.

By 30 July 2003, another 3,000 units are built – the "Última Edición". Two exclusive colours accompany the finale: "Aquarius Blue" and "Harvest Moon Beige". By way of comparison, in 1945/46, the first buyers had a choice of three more muted exterior colours: grey, blue, or black. It remains true to its engine concept in terms of location and design until the end, delivering 46 PS in its final version, a modest 21 PS more than in its early days. In addition to the two special colours, the special equipment features are the hallmarks of the last of its kind: chrome trim strips, hubcaps, and mirror housings, a parcel shelf, a two-spoke steering wheel with the Wolfsburg emblem, and a radio with CD player. Anyone who didn't secure one of the penultimate models through a Bavarian importer has the opportunity to admire the last one at the ZeitHaus at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. And to indulge a little in their own personal Beetle memories. Goodbye, old friend...
