The first study in which Volkswagen uses augmented reality is the I.D. VIZZION presented in 2018. The Gran Turismo, which features fully automated driving, is operated mainly via gesture and voice control. The destination can also be transmitted to the vehicle by voice control or a smart device. In addition, all the guests on board the I.D. VIZZION can use a HoloLens to project a virtual interface into real space using augmented reality when the need arises. The interface is a virtual ring that passengers can use to communicate with the car and other digital devices via gesture control. This “mixed reality” is increasingly being used in industry and will enter the realm of the automobile over the next decade. The I.D. VIZZION is one of the first studies in the world to give a glimpse of this world.
