Story: One night in GTI heaven
The fan community has been celebrating the GTI spirit at the legendary Wörthersee GTI meeting since 1982.

From 100 to 100,000 international fans: We are referring to the legendary Wörthersee GTI meeting. The Coronavirus situation has led to the cancellation of this year’s “madness on the lake”. To heighten anticipation of a swift reunion, we are using this Ascension Day to look back on some selected Wörthersee highlights from the last 39 years.

Erwin Neuwirth, founder of the GTI meeting, explains the idea: “The passion for this new car was decisive. There was nothing like it before and the Golf GTI shined for us. Back then, I had a restaurant in Reifnitz and, on my drives along the peaceful shore, I found the contrast between the calmness of the lake and the powerful car so appealing. The idea was sparked from that.”

“Madness on the lake”: A flying GTI, a surfing GTI or a Golf GTI in granite – the GTI meetings in the 80s laid the foundations for the enjoyment and euphoria that crossed generational boundaries.

Now and then: Selma Hauck, the former Miss GTI from 1987, finds the atmosphere and sense of community within the GTI family “magnetic”: “Real fans and friends come together here. There's a good kind of madness here at the lake,“ was her accurate conclusion a few years ago.

Celebrities get together. The well-known techno and rave band led by singer H.P. Baxxter gave the progressive Design Vision GTI concept (2013, left) its due prominence. Based on the seventh GTI generation, this “Super GTI” hides a 3.9-litre V6 with two turbochargers and 375 kW (510 PS) under the bonnet. On the right, you can see the GTI Roadster (2014). The concept, a cooperation between Volkswagen and software developer Sony Computer Entertainment, looks like something from outer space.

Reinhold Rupperath, known to all simply as “GTI Ruppi” has been a fan since day one. He has driven nothing but GTIs since 1978 and his “holiday at the lake” has been mandatory since 1983.Naturally, the 77-year-old was also part of the legendary 1986 GTI group photo.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data are determined in accordance with the measurement procedures prescribed by law. 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle completely replaced the NEDC test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are available for new type approved vehicles after that date.

This information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO2 emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior.

Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of 1 September 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit www.volkswagen.de/wltp.
