Volkswagen is focusing its development activities for autonomous and highly automated driving. In the area of autonomous driving as a service (MaaS/TaaS), the Group is consolidating its development partnerships. Volkswagen will no longer invest in Argo AI. In individual mobility, Cariad is continuing to drive forward the development of highly automated and autonomous driving together with Bosch and, in the future, in China with Horizon Robotics.

The new ID. Buzz: a perfect companion in the digital world
Buzz is headed sustainably and efficiently into the future, building on the great strengths long offered by Volkswagen buses. The interior of the ID. Buzz is an Open Space with plenty of room, outstanding variability and a high level of comfort. At the same time, the model is a pioneering companion in the digital world. It offers the best possible connectivity thanks to its fully digital operating concept and innovative infotainment system. Technical details such as USB-C ports are also on board, allowing passengers to perform rapid charging of their smartphones, laptops, etc. with a capacity of up to 45 watts. In combination with the clear design and fresh two-tone look, the ID. Buzz becomes a “digital living room” and therefore opens up a new dimension in electric mobility.
Jozef Kabaň, Head of Volkswagen Design, explains: “We have developed a vehicle layout with a logical and intuitive interior concept and variable use of space. The interior becomes a digital living room or office – just like our customers are familiar with from their own homes.” Up to eight USB interfaces. Customers now have an even larger number of options for using their mobile devices in the ID. Buzz – the electrically powered bus acts as both a digital living room and a mobile home office. Volkswagen optionally supplies small folding tables on the front seat backrests for laptops or tablets – the latter are held in specially designed recesses. Three USB-C ports are provided as standard for supplying power to smartphones, games consoles, notebooks and tablets used by the occupants in the ID. Buzz. Two of them – with data transfer capability – are located on the right next to the steering column, while the third is in the front passenger door. Customers can additionally order three further ports, one each in the interior mirror base and in the two sliding doors. Two more ports on the walls in the load compartment will follow soon.

An icon returns! With the ID. Buzz and the ID. Buzz Cargo, Volkswagen brings the T1’s DNA into the present – and the future. Like the first 1950 Bus, the new models are cleanly and functionally designed, while at the same time evoking a number of emotions. But how was that accomplished? Volkswagen designers provide exclusive insights into their work.
“The T1 was an icon of the 1950s,” says Jozef Kabaň, Head of Volkswagen Design. “With the ID. Buzz , we’re transferring its DNA into the age of electromobility. It’s conveying the icon’s genes and design elements into the digital age. The ID. Buzz is timeless, sustainable and extremely functional at the same time. These qualities make it unique. It draws a lot of sympathy and feeling of togetherness onto the road.” With the ID. Buzz, Volkswagen is breaking into a new market segment and in doing so is picking up the pace of its electric campaign in all vehicle classes as part of its ACCELERATE strategy. By 2030, at least 70 percent of Volkswagen sales in Europe is expected to be purely electric cars. That’s more than a million vehicles. In North American and China, the e-car share should be at least 50 percent. Clean character. With their unique lines, the ID. Buzzand the ID. Volkswagen Passenger Cars again significantly exceeds European CO2 fleet targets for 2021

Based on preliminary figures, Volkswagen Passenger Cars has exceeded the ambitious European CO2 fleet targets for 2021 and produced around 5.5 million grams fewer CO2 than required by law. The passenger car fleet of new vehicles in the European Union achieved average CO2 emissions of 113 g/km – the legal CO2 target for the brand was 119 g/km. In 2021, the realistic WLTP standard replaced the old NEDC. Volkswagen had already over-fulfilled the targets for 2020.
“By significantly exceeding our CO2 targets once again, we have demonstrated our fast and systematic approach to sustainability and the transformation towards e-mobility through our ACCELERATE strategy. We are thus making an important contribution to meeting the Paris climate goals. This year, we adding to the momentum with our new models,” said Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter. Last year, Volkswagen delivered more electric vehicles worldwide than ever before, handing over more than 369,000 electric cars (+73 percent versus 2020), including approximately 106,000 PHEVs (+33 percent) and 263,000 all-electric vehicles (+97 percent) to customers. The Group thus doubled its BEV deliveries year-on-year. Volkswagen will again increase its investments in the future over the next five years – to around €18 billion. Most of this, almost €14 billion, will be spent on e-mobility – for example for the development of further new models and the transformation of our plants towards e-mobility. In addition, there will be more than €1 billion for hybridization.

The Volkswagen Group will present solutions for the efficient, sustainable, safe and convenient movement of people and goods at the ITS World Congress in Hamburg, the world’s largest industry event for intelligent transportation systems, from October 11 to 15, 2021. The focus will be on autonomous driving, the intelligent use of vehicle data and the integration of electric vehicles into the power grid. Together with its Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, MOIA, CARIAD, Elli and MAN Truck & Bus brands, the Group will provide a forum for interested parties and experts with live demonstrations of pioneering pilot projects, discussion panels, lectures and expert talks.
