How far is
the energy transition?
Only when electric cars really run on green electricity do they help the environment. That is why, in addition to the proportion of newly registered e-cars in a country, it is also important to consider the country's progress towards the energy revolution.
The Energy Transition Index (ETI) measures both. It is designed in such a way that it tracks the energy transition at country level. It takes into account the diverse roles of the energy sector within a country's economy, as well as supporting regulations, markets and technologies.
The interactive chart shows the number of newly registered e-cars (for 2018) in the European countries in absolute numbers.
All primary energy sources - oil, gas, coal, nuclear and renewable - are expressed in million tons OE (Oil Equivalent) units. OE refers to a comparable share of the primary energy used by an economy for its production.
