Young reporters at the Karajan Music Tech Conference: "And suddenly you're online"
For the Karajan Music Tech Conference, the Karajan Institute, with the support of Volkswagen, organised a workshop with JungeReporter, which gave prospective editors insights into journalistic working techniques. The workshop and conference took place entirely online.
Slack and zoom instead of Salzburg
Initially participant Sophie-Caroline Danner would have traveled to Salzburg for the workshop and the conference. "Instead, all participants arranged to meet with Julia Kaiser in advance for preparatory meetings using the online tools Zoom and Slack, in order to do research, plan and also to conduct a few interviews with participants," says the 23-year-old. The JungeReporter workshop for the Karajan Music Tech Conference was the second of its kind that the musicology student attended. Normally, the participants meet in shared workspaces and can talk directly to each other. Danner is glad that everything was made possible online so quickly: "Via the Internet, many more people could participate in the conference!
Record attendance for online conference
This year, the Karajan Music Tech Conference recorded a total of 2,000 visitors from 68 countries on its first virtual stages. 30 panels were dedicated to various topics at the interface between music and state-of-the-art technology. Volkswagen has been a partner of the conference for four years. A Group representative was also present this year. Peter Wouda, Design Director of Volkswagen Group Innovation, took part in an interdisciplinary panel on ecology, mobility and urbanity to discuss how cultural and other institutions will continue after the corona crisis.
"I ask myself: How real is the virtual?"
Sophie-Caroline Danner is convinced that conferences of this kind and also journalistic work will change in the future. "The present time is a decisive experience for all of us." She hopes that networked activities in journalism will be more strongly promoted in the future. At the same time, however, she misses personal contact when reporting on location. "Direct human interaction, for example in interviews, and networking are usually the most important things for me at events like the Karajan Music Tech Conference.
