ID.3 celebrates its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main from September 12 to 22. But long before that, everyone is already talking about the first unique all-electric only Volkswagen model. The ID.3 heralds the start of a new era of mobility – emission-free, with a long range, yet affordable for the masses.
What’s behind the two letters, ID?
ID. is a new, independent product series in the Volkswagen brand portfolio. The name stands for intelligent design, identity and visionary technologies. While the Beetle once mobilized the masses and the Golf in every new generation has brought innovations into the class named after it, ID. models will make e-mobility attractive for a broad range of customers.

What does the number “3” represent?
The number 3 has two meanings: First, it identifies the ID. as a representative of the compact segment, because it belongs to the third size classification in the internal and industry-wide grouping. On the other hand, ID.3 is the third major chapter of strategic importance in the history of the Volkswagen brand after the Beetle and the first Golf. “We are starting with ID.3 from the center, Volkswagen’s brand core, in which the majority of the models and the sales volume can be found. The number 3 also indicates the potential for expansion in the segments above and below, we have a lot in the pipeline,” says Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management with responsibility for Brand Management Sales and Marketing, in his outlook on Volkswagen’s electric offensive.

Where will the ID.3 be produced?
The first model developed for purely electric drive will be assembled at the vehicle plant in Zwickau, a location rich with tradition. The plant is being converted into the largest production site for e-mobility in Europe. The first ID. series vehicles are scheduled to roll-off the assembly line at the end of 2019.
