The Volkswagen premieres at Frankfurt Motorshow 2017
Terrific trio
It has space for 36 vehicles and is lit by 1,069 lamps. It is located about 360 km south of Wolfsburg. Any ideas? You guessed right! Of course we're talking about the Volkswagen stand at IAA 2017.
The first show day is traditionally reserved for international media representatives. Hall 3 will probably welcome about one million people over the 13 days of the motor show. Visiting a motor show is tiring, but it's also exhilarating: take this year's program for Stand 3.0 A02, for example:
Premiere 1: the I.D. family
E-mobility is making a breakthrough at Volkswagen: that is a clear signal from Frankfurt. The brand is forging ahead into this new era with the avant-garde I.D. family. The first model, the compact and visionary I.D., will be in the showrooms in 2020. The second member of the I.D. family is the new I.D. CROZZ1. This all-wheel drive, zero-emission SUV will also arrive on the market in 2020. The I.D. BUZZ, on the other hand, is a reinterpretation of the legendary Bulli. It goes on sale from 2022.
All I.D. concept vehicles share the unique design DNA for electric mobility. Other shared characteristics include zero-emission driving ranges of up to approx. 600 kilometers and a lounge-like spatial concept.
Premiere 2: the SUV offensive
Unlike the I.D. family, the newly-developed compact-class crossover, the T-Roc, will already be available this year. Volkswagen is launching the T-Roc in Germany in the €20,000 price segment.
Dr. Herbert Diess is convinced "the T-Roc sets a new benchmark in the booming SUV segment". The Volkswagen brand CEO adds: "With its functionality, dynamic handling and innovative technology, the T-Roc embodies all good Volkswagen qualities and will further boost our SUV campaign." The green light for the expansion of the SUV range was given back in 2016 when the second generation of the Tiguan made its debut. The new Tiguan Allspace is currently gaining momentum – it is an extended version of the Tiguan that seats up to seven people. The world premiere of the next generation Touareg at the end of this year marks another milestone in the SUV strategy.
Premiere 3: Triple GTI
The range of sporty Volkswagen models is also being expanded. The latest addition is the Polo GTI, giving Volkswagen three GTI models in its range for the first time: the up! GTI to be launched in 2018, the iconic Golf GTI2,3,4,5 and the new Polo GTI – they all share high powertrain agility, low weight, and tight yet comfortable running gear.
The up! will be available as a GTI for the first time. But the original has already been on the market for more than forty years: the sporty Golf celebrated its world premiere in Frankfurt in 1976. Now the seventh generation of the Golf GTI is on the starting blocks, but the Polo has also been impressive as a Gran Turismo for decades. Its history began in 1980 with the first GT. Thanks to changing over to the modular transverse matrix (MQB) the new Polo has increased length, wheelbase and width, making it significantly more spacious. It is the perfect companion for a safe drive home from the motor show – laden with brochures, catalogs, and many impressions and memories of IAA 2017.
