Electronic sports, or e-sports for short, is booming. For years there has been significant growth in computer and video game competitions. In 2018, the European e-sports market achieved a turnover of around 240 million Euros according to the management consultancy Deloitte. By 2023, it is expected to increase to around 670 million Euros. With a turnover of 70 million Euros, Germany is currently Europe’s largest e-sports market and the soccer game “FIFA” – belonging to games supplier "EA Sports" – is one of the most popular e-sports games.
Soccer on the virtual field
German soccer club VfL Wolfsburg has been involved in electronic sports with the help of Volkswagen since 2015. One of the best players: the professional FIFA e-athlete and reigning coach of Germany's national team: Benedikt Saltzer.
