A ball, two goals and a handful of players: this is soccer – and yet so much more: fair play, sporting spirit and camaraderie are just some of the values that can be conveyed to adolescents through soccer and other sports. This is exactly what the “Operation Get Active” (OGA) initiative at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant in Tennessee has set out to do.
First and foremost, the initiative, which originated from a foundation arm of the local soccer club Chattanooga FC and is supported by the Volkswagen Workers Foundation USA, aims to convey a healthy lifestyle. In the USA, where fruit and vegetables are often more expensive than fast food, they can often become everything else than the first choice option at meal times, just as regular sport is also often sacrificed. Since sports activities are usually very expensive for children and young people, socially disadvantaged families cannot afford such things.
